The side valve covers can leak over time and require a re-RTV application as well as a replacement of the "half moon" gaskets located in the rear of the valve cover. The oil will fall on to hot exhaust parts and of course burn off and smoke. I would look into where the residue is building up on the exhaust parts and think proactively from there. The location will give away the location of the leak.
